Search-The building block of information retrieval
Search is anything you look for and everyone is exposed to this day to day event. We search objects, data and information in many ways be it tangible or intangible. Through this small article we will take you through the journey of Search, we call it the building block of information retrieval.
We can call a search as the organized pursuit of information while talking in the context of digital world. But in our day-to-day affairs it can be both organised and unorganized. Organised searches takes less time and efforts while the unorganized one involves great efforts and consumes more time as we exactly don’t know where to find the desired result. Just take an example of searching a particular medicine in your room. Without having a first aid kit where you can put all your medicines you have to look at each drawer, racks and eventually the whole room to find the medicine. In this case it is unorganized and having a first aid box and searching for the medicine inside it can be called as an organised search.
But in the digital world search is all about organised search where we can use a search term specifically called as the Query to find information about digitized objects, places, etc. using search tools being refereed as a Search Engine. So lets understand what can we search in the digital world.
Using a Search Query you may find a collection of documents, email messages, Web pages, details of places, media contents, maps, and almost every information that you can imagine all being in a virtual place and manner. Search helps you to find the information you want but you don’t know where to get the same.
To have a successful digital search we have to first understand what is a query, what are the various search tools, and how a search result is found out. I our next article we will be discussing a bit about the Queries you can make to the Search Engines and gradually move towards understanding the anatomy of the engine behind every information retrieval.
